KINGS COURT WEST 139th ST.
BLOCK ASSOCIATION

Our Association represents, manages, and supports the residents of the northern part of Strivers’ Row (139th street only) and has been in existence for nearly 70 years. We were one of the first Block Associations in Harlem and have helped in the formation of other associations throughout our historic neighborhood.

Together with West 138th Street Strivers Row Block Association, we represent Harlem’s Strivers’ Row, a group of 160 row-houses on West 138th and West 139th streets between Adam Clayton Powell Jr Boulevard and Frederick Douglass Boulevard. Please visit Striver's Row for more information about Striver's Row.

The two associations collaborate regularly and extensively in numerous initiatives for the benefit of the whole Strivers’ Row community and we have an ongoing joint committee dedicated to the management of the South Driveway between 138th and 139th streets.

We take great pride in our efforts to build a strong and cohesive community. A community that believes that all voices should be heard and respected.

COMMITTEES

With the exception of the Executive Board which comprises the four elected officers of the Block Association (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer), committees are typically formed to support and execute specific projects, as with the Home Tour initiatives in 2013 and 2014 (see Strivers' Row Home Tour )

Election Committee

The Election Committee is formed only on election years (2019, 2021, 2023, etc.) and comprises volunteers who are not current officers. The Election Committee’s duties include: calling on neighbors to invite them to nominate themselves, or fellow residents, for open leadership positions on the Block Association; notifying the neighbors of the nominated candidates; receiving and counting the ballots, and officially declaring the winning officers after election day.

North Driveway Committee

Currently, the north side of 139th street has formed the North Driveway Committee whose goal is to maintain and preserve the status of the driveway and of the gates between 139th and 140th streets and between Adam Clayton Powell and Frederick Douglass Boulevards.

138 & 139 Street Strivers Row Committee

In 2020, together with the West 138th Street Strivers Row Landmark Block Association, we formed the 138 & 139 Street Strivers Row Committee (known informally as the 138-139 St. Driveway Committee) whose main goals are to maintain and preserve the status of the driveway and of the gates between 138th and 139th streets and between Adam Clayton Powell and Frederick Douglass Boulevards.

ELECTION PROCESS

Elections are coordinated by the Block Association Election Committee which is appointed the month prior to election day.

On election year, if residents are interested in being a candidate for any of these offices, they may nominate themselves. Or, if residents know a neighbor on either the north or south side of our block of West 139th Street who they believe would be a good candidate, they will be asked to complete a form.

If residents are nominating someone other than themselves, it would be best if they could check with the neighbor first about whether they are interested in serving, but it is not required. The committee will follow up with everyone who has been nominated.

The Election Committee will then ratify the final candidates, receive and count the ballots, and finally declare the winners.
